What it is
Business intelligence that connects to your database and lets people ask questions and build dashboards, with or without SQL. Open source and self-hostable.
Who it is for
Teams with data in a database and questions that nobody has time to answer by hand.
Where it is strongest
Letting non-technical colleagues answer their own questions against real data. That removes a recurring interruption from whoever currently writes the queries.
Where it falls short
Query performance depends entirely on your database; a slow one makes Metabase look slow. Complex analysis still needs SQL. And giving people direct access to production data needs thought about permissions before it needs a dashboard.
Our verdict
Recommended as a first BI tool, and the open-source version is genuinely complete. Set up read access and permissions properly before anyone else gets in.
