What it is
A full analytics platform you can host yourself, with the depth of the commercial tools and ownership of the data: funnels, heatmaps, session recording and e-commerce tracking.
Who it is for
Organisations that need detailed analytics and cannot or will not send visitor data to a third party.
Where it is strongest
Depth with data ownership. Self-hosted, the visitor data never leaves your infrastructure, which is the one thing Google Analytics can never offer.
Where it falls short
Self-hosting means running and updating it, and it gets heavy on a busy site. In its full configuration it still needs a consent banner. And the interface is noticeably less refined than its commercial rivals.
Our verdict
Recommended where data ownership is a requirement rather than a preference. If it is a preference, Plausible is far less work for most of the value.
